CDU/CSIRO research opportunities Savanna fire ecology research project
opportunities in northern Australia

The Geospatial Ecology and Remote Sensing lab (GEARS) explores the structure
and dynamics of ecosystems at multiple spatial and temporal scales. We
integrate cutting edge developments in remote sensing, GIS, and big data
analytics with field ecology to understand the mechanisms shaping the patterns
and processes we observe in nature. Through our process-based research, we
strive to develop the insights needed to mitigate the effects of changing
climate and land-use conditions on ecosystem goods and services.
Current research spans the gradient from semi-arid savanna to tropical forest
ecosystems across the globe. Our base in Darwin, northern Australia, provides
unparalleled access to the largest intact savanna region in the world -
offering fantastic challenges and opportunities to advance ecological theory,
inform sustainable land management, and conserve biodiversity.

We are looking for enthusiastic postgraduate students to join our research
program at Charles Darwin University (CDU) and CSIRO in early 2017. New
projects are aimed at improving understanding and management of carbon, fire,
and water in north Australian savannas.

Research within GEARS is highly collaborative and students will interact with
partners and supervisors from within CDU’s Research Institute for the
Environment and Livelihoods (RIEL), CSIRO’s Land and Water Flagship,
University of Western Australia (UWA), Airborne Research Australia (ARA), and
the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC).
